Hi,

If you are using Kde, open konqueror and click on the Settings menu. In that menu, click on Configure Konqueror, and select File Associations. Then select the file extension and the application you want to associate it with.

I'm believe that gnome has something similar.

Uh. AFAIK using just the extension (.xavi) instead of a combination of MIME-type (x-streaming/ms-video-x-crap) plus extension isn't good practice unless you can be sure all applications handle checking MIME-types themselves? I mean, if you just use the extension, wouldn't it be like ClippyOS?
