Assistance with replacing(changing) Icons on Mate 1.6.0 Taskbar

Assistance please and would be appreciated. i am running Linux Mint Debian Edition (mate) 3.10.486 pae. My problem is that the icons to the right of the lower taskbar are gray squares. Initially they were the correct ones, but somewhow have vanished leaving me with 3 gray boxes on the right lower taskbar. How do I fix these?
1) Replace the 1st square with the Update icon (shield)
2) Replace the 2nd gray square with the "output" icon (speaker)
3) Replace the 3rd gray square with the Ethernet Wired Connection icon (plug and wire)

Thank you for any assistance. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so need simple step by step instructions, please.

I don't know what happened to your icons, but you may find the configuration editor will help
http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/docs:gsettings
If Mint doesn't install it by default (they may think it too scary for beginners!) it will be in Synaptic. Try looking under Apps - Panel - Objects and see if the items are listed and if they have a use-custom-icon option. If they do, you can give the address of a suitable icon: they live in /usr/share/icons or /usr/share/pixmaps.

David,
Thanks. the icons were there on a previous install. I did repartition the disk, wiped it and re-installed it and no icons. They vanished. But I've used this install iso disk on other computers and got the icons. So, I'll try your suggestions and report back.
Thanks again.
