AryaLinux installation USB external HDD failed without warning
 
Hi,

I tried to install Arya Linux 2016/08 R2 Mate x86_64.

The installation process through the installer went well, the message box telling installation complete appeared so I rebooted to verify the installation on the HDD. Their is absolutely nothing installed. It seems that the message of completed installation appeared without any installation process. After thinking about it, the install was very fast!!! Normally when I install another distribution it takes around 5 min to install all files... for Arya, zero seconds, just the pop-up message!

I'm not a programmer so for me to do terminal scripts is not easy beyond usual package install/update.

I like the slick design, just want to install it without trouble to test it as a contender against SolusOS, Point Linux (debian + mate) and Ubuntu Mate. Up to now my vote goes for Point Linux... But if Arya manage to install, it might change.

Welcome to LQ!
Maybe post in the Intro Forum about your hw, [Linux] interests/goals/distro experiences, ... (NOT questions tho!)

I wonder: does/did Arya 'do' [update/install] *grub*? (like this distro) Do you have grub?
Can you mount the partition[s?] you gave it, and look for /boot [&what the install wrote?]

The Arya forum has lots of info (esp Maintainer chandrakant, who seems very helpful & interested in user experiences!) e.g. this (and this).

Hi joellapointe1717. Indeed installation doesnt take 0 secs. So something is not right here. Can try the following steps:
Boot into the live media. Open terminal and do:

sudo su
cd /opt/installer
git pull

And then try installing.

If that does not change the installer's behaviour, please post the following information:

1. output of:

fdisk -l

2. What are the partitions that you are using for Root/Home/Swap

Maybe OP meant: [zero time] 'after file-copy finished' [because Arya doesn't 'do' grub?]...
Does Arya install grub? (bootloader to MBR, on 'blank' disk; I know nothing about EFI)

It does grub. It does this in fact: copying.. chrooting.. fixing some permissions.. creating user etc.. grub-install.. I've asked for more input. then i can troubleshoot better...

(looks like chandrakant will be back to help in a day; I hope you don't mind my [semi-Newbie me] thoughts/questions here...)

If you mount sdb6 [on like /mnt/...], does it look like Arya put itself there?
(to check this, you could try 'erasing' sdb6 with mkfs before installing)

How long does it spend on ('after') step 6of6 of this, meaning:
*when* you click ok to "partitions will be formatted"
*until* it says "completed...reboot to login...have a nice day"?
(maybe a few seconds around "Creating filesystems with ... 4k blocks and ... inodes",
and a minute to do [thousands of] "/mnt/src/... -> /mnt/dest/..." ?)
Does it start by saying ROOT_PARTITION:/dev/sdb6?
Does it say/display/scroll *roughly* thousands of lines of files (including final 'removed's)
before the final "System transfer complete"?
Do any ['important'] error messages happen? (tho they may 'flash by')

NuTyX (similarly based on LFS!) which I played with a while ago (on XP netbook in VBox),
installed like HUNDRED(s) time FASTER than other distros!
(but I don't [fully] know why!)

By any chance, does Arya actually add to grub.cfg [boot choices],
but grub still default-boots your 'main' OS (unless you down-arrow to choose Arya)?

Hi,

There is a small discrepancy in the inputs that you specified with the partitions. If the root and home partitions are same you should not mention the same thing in both home and root. Mentioning it in the root itself is enough. So this is how the inputs should be:

Root : /dev/sdb6
Home : -
Swap : /dev/sdb5

I know its something that the installer should take care of rather than expecting the user to know it. My Bad :-) I would fix the installer but as of now this should get you going.

As for the other questions, it would usually take about 5-10 mins for the partitions to be formatted, files copied, users created in the new system and other files created like /etc/fstab and localization being applied etc and finally grub installation.

Arya actually reinstalls grub. But detects the other OSs as well. So once Arya is installed, you would have Arya as the default option and other options below it. This is smiliar to any other distro you install. Once you boot into Arya, you can however use the grub-customizer to change this sequence.

Is there a way to see a more ''verbose mode'' of the install so it says in which steps it is precisely in terminal. I could copy/paste in the forum. There my have more details this way?

So the installer still says complete in no time? There isn't any verbose mode but you can try opening the installer in terminal and see the output:

python /opt/installer/Installer.py

Then run the installer till the end. Once you're at the success screen in another terminal inspect the following file:

/tmp/install-properties

This is where all your inputs would be stored. Paste the file's contents here. Also if you could share whether the right device name is shown in the first screen. Post what is shown there. Let's say the first screen says /dev/sda then post the output of:

sudo partx -s /dev/sda -o NR,START,END,SIZE,TYPE

Try this inside a terminal before starting the installer:

sudo umount /dev/sdb6
sudo umount /dev/sdb5
sudo swapoff /dev/sdb5

Explanation::

There are few things I understand by seeing this file. There are few parameters that are supposed to be in the file but they are missing. The reason being these parameters are added after the root partition is formatted. This means somewhere things are breaking before that step. Now there are very few lines if code above it. So the possibility of breaking can happen only in the lines that do the formatting. The most obvious reason why formatting would fail is if the partition that you are trying to format is already mounted and so I suspect that your partitions after mounted when the formatting is attempted. This is more so likely because it's an external device. Why it never showed up so far neither with me nor with other users is because probably neither me nor others ever attempted an external device installation. Mostly it has been virtualbox or physical internal HDD. But this is an absolutely valid use case that the installer should take care of. I would fix it in the installer as soon as I can.
