Artswrapper Problem

Hi there,

I have my soundcard configured to run using ALSA, and aRts in KDE. Normally its fine, but I have run into some problems when playing Quake 2.

At first the sound didn't work at all, but then having looked in the aRts manual I used artsdsp to run it. Now the sound works, but there is a considerable delay (>500ms) in playback. In the aRts section of the control center, I turned on 'Informational' message display, and have managed to get the following error:

Sound server warning message:
Can't set real-time scheduling priority.
You need to run artswrapper as root or
setuid root. This means that you will
likely not be able to produce acceptable
sound (i.e. without clicks and breaks).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have deduced that the artswrapper daemon(?) is run every time I log into KDE, so where do I need to go to change the settings? Is there an equivalent of the Winblows startup folder? I know that you use init to start different processes at different times, but isn't this before the destop is loaded? Also it would be nice if you could tell me exactly how to 'setuid root', please?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance for any help you can give. :)

setuid root

To setuid root log into KDE as user. Start a terminal. At the command prompt type in su. Enter your password when it asks for it. Then enter the command you want to execute. This will be something like quake2.
