Armada 1700/MD 8.2/Sound Problem

Hello eveeryone, thanks for reading!

I have a simple problem of there being absolutely no sound on my Compaq Armada 1700! I'm currently using Mandrake 8.2 d/l edition. What do I need to do? Recompile my kernel? If so, can someone point me to a tutorial or post about recompiling it in Mandrake 8.2 for newbs. Or do I just need to d/l the alsa driver or what? Also I was curious. isn't 8.2 supposed to have KDE 3.0? Mine is currently 2.2.2. Also I'm using the defualt kernel, 2.4.8-16mdk? Or something like that. I tried to mess with the setting's in kde control panel under sound server but all it says now is could not find dev/dsp or something like that. BTW when I was installing MD it said that there was no sound card detected and to use harddrake. I went into HD but it didn't show anything at all under sound. Please help...

You need to review your documentation but I think that the Compaq Armada 1700 has a ESS 1688 sound card built-in. The kernel supports this driver.

Alternatively, the instructions for installing the drivers are provided by the ALSA project http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...&module=es1688

Here is the experience of someone using your box with an older distro.

Try running sndconfig, as root, from a console or the command line. It'll bring up a menu for you select the card and set it up. If sndconfig is not loaded to your system, just install the rpm from your install CDs.

Thanks guys..

I actually just got through running sndconfig, from a failsafe boot loggined in as root. It didn't find it as pnp, so I manually configered it as a s.b. 16. I tried the ess1688 and a couple of other ones but, s.b. 16 with a couple of changes to the dma and stuff works great! I heard the wav n midi perfectly. =) I'm so happy! I'm very new to linux and want to learn more, sooo much more! I use win98(strangely) on my big box, w2k on a 5.4 gig for my laptop, and the current 10 gig with linux on it. Thanks guys soo much! =) =) =) BTW this is my 3rd day of trying m.d. 8.2 d/l edition and pretty much linux! O, quick question though, what the best way to capture and view packets/network traffic?

Detailed settings

I have the same problem w/ red hat 7.3. Is it possible to get the detailed settings you used from you?

Thanks a bunch.
