Are there any good Linux-compatible streaming video capture/conversion programs?

I'm brand new to Linux after 12 years on Microsoft. I like it a lot so far, but still have a lot to learn and figure out.

My question is about streaming video capture and conversion programs and whether anyone can steer me toward any decent Linux-based tools.

When I was using windows I bought a very good program from NCH called Replay Media Catcher that allowed me to capture streaming video in several formats, even live streaming video, and had a built-in conversion tool that let me convert from flv to MPG4.

Can anyone point me toward a Linux-based tool like that, or if such a thing even exists?

Thanks, everybody.

VLC work perfectly in Linux. FFmpeg and mEncoder are the most used. They don't have interfaces, but are quite easy to script, so you can call your scripts directly from right click on the file in your favorite file manager.

Thanks for the suggestions. They were a big help and now I'm off and running.

A good day to all.
