Are there any audio digital recorders compatible with linux?
I recently bought a Sony ICDUX560 recorder and I just discovered that it is only compatible with windows operating systems for file transfers. I am hoping that an LQ member can advise me if there is a linux compatible digital audio recorder that I can buy!! Thank You!!
The Sony ICDUX560 recorder is equipped with a " sound organizer " that must be installed and detected into a windows computer. This " sound organizer with its license agreement " is the only way to to get any recordings made with the Sony ICDUX560 recorder transferred to anything else!!
I've used Olympus dictaphones with Ubuntu for recording professional letters:
If you get a device from the top (DS) range, you can't use with Linux - as the dictaphone saves the files in a proprietary encrypted format that requires Olympus software to access from a Windows PC (might be possible from Mac, but definitely not Linux).
If you use a lower level device, it saves the file as a simple audio file (MP3) that you can transfer easily. The device connects with USB cable and mounts like any USB storage device, you can then transfer the files directly. I bought a dictaphone from the VS range and can transfer files easily.
It's worth noting that the VS (and other devices that aren't high end devices) don't allow you to record over what you've recorded in a file ... so you can record, pause, restart and delete the file ... but if you make a mistake it's either accept the mistake or delete the file and start again, you can't rewind a few seconds and record over the mistake.
I'd love to be able to use a high end dictaphone with Linux, or even use a built-in microphone with decent controls via the keyboard or on-screen, but there isn't anything that I've found that functions as well as the high end dictaphones that use proprietary software.
