Are the nVidia drivers included if you buy Mandrake 10.1?
 

Are the nVIDIA drivers included if you buy MDK10.1. I can't find any info on this on their website.

MDK 10.1 is a great distro but I'm having a complete nightmare trying to install the drivers. They installed with no problems on version10 but now It tells me there is some conflict with a kernel module "rivafb driver" what ever that is.

Mandrake deserve supporting so I'll buy a copy if I know the drivers are included!

Any coments anyone?

Yes, it detects the "rivafb driver" and tells you not to have them loaded at the same time.

So what? They still work just fine as long as you don't have that driver loaded. And if your computer is new enough to run 10.1, it shouldn't be running that driver.

And no, they don't include nVidia's legal property in with the cd's because nVidia owns the drivers, not mandrake.

Thanks for that info. What file do I need to edit then to stop the "rivafb driver" loading at boot?

PS How come PCLinuxOS has the nVIDIA drive included but not MDK?

So are you really saying that you can pay, for the privelage, to download drivers that are on nvidia.com for free?

you can just use the drivers from nvidia.com as they work fine dont worry about the rivafb warning thats will only conflict if u have got a riva bassed video card installed and i take u dont just a tad on the very old side

come on my friend lets be fare, We wouldn't have Linux if it wasn't for the likes of Mandrake, SuSE, Redhat etc etc. and lets not forget Mr Torvalds. Then there is the mega guys developing KDE & Gnome. We should all be happy to support these dudes. Just look at what £30 will get you compared to what you'd have to pay with M$ and then it would probably crash, get a virus or get hacked into.

The drivers are indeed freely available, as are other similar, such as ATI's driver, and other software. Some of the freely available software is easy to install; some, for Linux newcomers, and even those not so new, can present more of a problem. And the convenience of pre-packaged binaries is hard to ignore.

I'm quite happy, and able in most cases, to compile and install from source if a binary isn't available; but for the purpose of quick and simple system administration, I'll always look for pre-packaged stuff first - it's just so much easier.

Personally, I do think Mandrake's deal is a good one, not to mention the fact that revenue generated helps the distribution and ultimately the wider community. But ultimately, it's a personal choice - thank goodness for Open Source.

My point exactly. I totally agree. If anyone is willing to take, but not put something in, be it a purchase or developement help then they are worse than M$!

I dont really like mandrake at all, it did poorly on my drivers as well as my nvidia gforce fx 5200. I would explore a little it i was you.

I had the same problem with my MSI FX5700 LE. Mandrake 10.1 Official installed the nvidia driver ok, but it had some major hardware conflicts crashing KDE whenever I started an OpenGL app.

I'm using Suse9.2 Pro now (bought it actually) and I'm more than satisfied with it.
Hardware recognition is the best I've seen sofar.
