Are .appimage files safe to download software?

I went to get this program and rather than referring me to the Software center or Synaptic it has an .appimage file. Never heard of such a thing. It seems like an .exe file but for Linux. Are these things safe? When you use it do you get automatic updates? So are they good to use or should they be avoided? Thanks.

Hi,

like pretty much any binaries, it depends if you trust whoever created it. Lots of info about AppImage online if you feel like doing some reading.
