Ardour problems on Knoppix 3.3 hd install

I'm very new to Linux. About two weeks ago I got a copy of Knoppix 3.3live cd from my brother, and was hooked right away. I'm building a newhome system, and the *only* reason I wouldn't completely commit to linuxwas multitrack recording software.Currently I'm using n-track studio running on windows xp pro. I wouldreally like to find a replacement, as this is the only app holding meback from going all-linux.

Here is my problem:I ran apt-get install ardour, and got "couldn't find package ardour". Ifinally found on some list that I should apt-get install ardour-gtk.This seemed to work okay, except it doesn't run. Typing "ardour" in abash shell gives me

Ardour/GTK 0.431.1 running with libardour 0.715.0/usr/share/themes/Geramik/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:25: error: unexpected identifier`GtkButton', expected character `}'Loading UI configuration file /etc/ardour/ardour_ui.rcardour: [ERROR]: No JACK server found.client name: ardourKilled

Hmm... I wonder why JACK isn't running? So i typed JACK...

This is jack 2.99.9 (C) 2002 Arne Zellentin <>Warning: could not open generic device /dev/sgXXX for reading andwriting.Info: matching dir found: ./jack/jack-020d0901Error: could not read CD's TOC. : maybe cdparanoia is not installed?

Cdparanoia? Hmmm.. apt-get install cdparanoia... Now it's installed...but same errors..I apologize for any obvious ignorance, but I would really like an excuseto dump M$ once and for all, so I would appreciate any help/pointers youguys could give me.

dont know if you fixed the problem but the package you want is "jackit" not "jack". Jackit is also known as jack and is an audio connection kit,Jack is a cd ripper. this confused me at first as well. Good luck

Thanks for your reply... After much gnashing of teeth trying to get sound stuff working on my laptop, I've decided to wait. I've just ordered parts to build a new computer, and will resume my quest when they come in. I'll keep you posted

What you're looking for is jackd. Use apt-get or synaptic to get it and start it by typing jackd -d dummy
Dummy being the dummy driver for audio. If you've got ALSA installed and working, then replace dummy with alsa. I'd suggest looking around online for some help with running jackd or look at the man page for it. It's new to me too, so mess around with commands until good things happen
After you get jackd running at the command line then open up ardour. Things are a bit messed up with me and I have to sudo ardour to get it to go. Ardour is messed up for me with bad colors for the top menu and nothing shows up on the mixer controls area. I believe there is some config file you can change to fix the colors, but it didn't work for me.
