aptitude error in upgrade
I have installed old version of debian sarge 3.1 and I wanted to do update not to reinstall cause I have a lot of customized things that I didn't want to do again

So anyway I got a problem with aptitude I edited source.list
add a close mirror (Installation of the sarge was from CD's so and was totally networkless)
So when I run apt-get update and aptitude update
aptitude dist-upgrade I got a problem with error that look like this

E: Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/ (1)

I'm almost certain that it is a small error
I tried with other mirrors too but get the same error
I'm a bit new in that upgrading story so I would just like to get some sort of the answer ...
To no reinstall
Btw if some of the files or some of the stdout or stderr outputs are needed ask me or state of any file ...
I just need to get this done quickly cause it is really old :)

Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.list file?

Generally, when you do upgrades, you should do them piecemeal. Do Sarge to Etch, then Etch to Lenny (current stable), then Lenny to Squeeze (current testing - if you so desire).

Ok I'll try to do upgrade in steps
If it fails I'll post you sources.list
