apt-get question

sudo apt-get install build-essential libpcre3-dev \
zlib1g-dev libncurses5-dev curl perl bc

I had to executed the above line. I tried to left arrow back from the end to the top of the line to make a necessary correction, but it would only go to the first character of the second line. What is the \ for in the above?

Hi

The \ is used when you want to run a command that is too long to put in one line. The shell will join lines ending with a \ with the next line.

So it's the same as this:

Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential libpcre3-dev lib1g-dev libncurses5-dev curl perl bc

Yes there's a max, but it's quite big. You can see it with this command:

Code:
getconf ARG_MAX
I got this number:
