apt-get connection times out

I am trying to run apt-get update but I keep getting a "connection timed out" result. I have tried changing to different download servers and get the same result. Any suggestions?

Make sure you have a valid internet connection. You can do this many different ways:

1.) See if your favorite web browser can load any website
2.) Run "ifconfig" or "/sbin/ifconfig" depending on where it is located on your system. If you have a valid IP address then you probably have an internet connection.
3.) Run "ping $something" where $something is any web address. If you get a response then you have a connection.

In the future, try to give more information about your situation, i.e., your hardware, your distro, etc.

My internet connection works fine, I am using it to post this message. I even tried turning off the firewall to see if it was somehow blocking it but that did not work either.

Are you connected to the internet? Can you ping -c 3 How about ping -c 3

Sorry, interrupted while typing, I see you have a valid connection...

It just sounds like a name server problem to me, but as you said, you're using the internet to post this...
