apt and java install Fedora Core 2
Hi guys.
I just worked out how to use apt last night to install mplayer, which worked well. How ever would it be the same for java, the mrs cant view her online game she plays quiet offen. would it be like so. apt-get install java or would it be apt-get install j2re I'm still queit new to apt can any one help me out please. TT |
I didn't use apt to get Java installed, but downloading the rpms from www.java.com and to install them went all fine for me... didn't have any problem! (FC2 too)
Perhaps you can give that a try? Remember to set the path to Java in the browser! ;) smokylux |
Thanks I just tried the above commands and i got
Code:
[root@localhost ]# apt-get install j2re http://home.gagme.com/greg/linux/fc2-tips.php#java Quote:

Did you set the path to Java in your browser? Which Browser do you use?
in console, try the following: whereis java OR whereis j2re it should show you the path to the java bin file, which you must set in the browser (at least I had to, using Konqueror, but it uses Mozilla plugins as well) Look for "plugins" in the configuration menu in your browser.... Hope this will help ;) Smokylux |
Where do the files normaly sit ? All i got was this
Code:
[root@localhost root]# whereis j2re |
sorry, was my fault, I used "locate" to find the java bin.... well this is my folder for the java bin: (Just checked it over ssh, cause I'm at office right now, using Window$ ;) ):
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/bin in that folder there is an executable Java.... this is where you have to point the path in your browsers settings |
Under Mozilla Browser it says the plugins are installed.
Looks to me its installed, Would i have to log in via root giu and scan for plugin dir ? Code:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so |
Well, yes give that a try!
Just a notice: I have a folder /usr/lib/mozilla-1.6/ which I think is the correct one where to put all this.... Noticed this when I wanted to install the flashplayer... typing /usr/lib/mozilla as isntallation directory gave me an error, until I noticed, that this other directory exists... Perhaps you should try Konqueror as browser for the game.... (configuring it, like I described before) If that doesn't help, I'm afraid I won't be any help at all.... that's all I can say for sure with my little experience ;) Good luck! smokylux |
My Mozilla doesn't seem to have a scan thing for plugins but under the Help-About Plug-ins on Mozilla browser they say they are installed.
My Mozilla version is, Mozilla 1.6 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040510 Also we use Konqueror browser, and i just did a scan to find the plugin folder I think its here /usr/lib/jre/plugin/i386/ This is the error we get Quote:

In Konqueror the scanning didn't work for me...
does the folder /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/bin/ exist? In Konqueror, under plugins in the config menu, look for Java plugin. There must be somewhere a field where you can enter a path to the Java executable. Put the folder mentioned above in that field, or (better) browse for it using the folder icon on the right. restart Konqueror after accepting these changes, and give it a try again. |
The path you said doesn't seem to be in the system
but i did find this [root@localhost root]# find / -name java /usr/share/java /usr/lib/jre/bin/java Their are a few files in the folder. Code:
ControlPanel java_vm kinit ktab policytool rmiregistry tnameserv TT |
well that's exactly the same files I've got in my bin folder.... the executable is the "java" file.... try it, hope it will work!
At least for me it did ;) (I think the fact that your path is different from mine is due to the use of another rpm, got mine from java.com) Good luck again ;) smokylux |
Sooo.... is Java up and running now? Everything all right with that java game?
Let me know, as I'm learning myself ;) smokylux |
Seems to be working, but that game wont work, still get the error
I can view java by visiting one of my subs http://rvsrg.rockinghamgateway.com/ TT |
