apropos, man -k, man -f?

Hi,

Whenever I try apropos / man -k / man -f with any command, it tells me that there is nothing appropriate. How do i get this to work? could someone help?

varunvarde2007 03-22-2005 01:31 AM

Can you basically tell me for what you are using this command

i mean what are you willing to do so i can reply you

krishvij 03-22-2005 02:29 AM

basically it gives you a brief description of any command that you want help about. like i can do a

man -k ls

and then it would give me a brief description of the ls command. that is exactly what i am not able to get.

Hi,

dont bother. i found the solution. i just had to create the whatis database using the command /usr/sbin/makewhatis

after that man -k and man -f and even apropos works real fine

RHEL must not set up the whatis database for you, like most Linux distros I have used.

I have to do the "makewhatis" on older unix systems I work with, but I have never had to in Linux.

krishvij,

thanks for making sure you posted your solution. I too could not get apropos to work, until I read this...

Thanks!
