applications in Gnome taking forever (minutes) to launch
I started using Gnome the other day. At first I had no trouble. My problem is that it is now taking forever for applications to launch. It's not that the system is being unresponsive. An example: I double-click the "Start Here" icon. Nothing happens, the CPU is mostly idle, and I can go about my business normally except that Nautilus doesn't come up with the "Start Here" stuff. Then, maybe a couple of minutes later, it suddenly comes up. Once it comes up, it behaves normally. This seems to happen only after I've started something like Galeon or Mozilla.
I have to think that it is waiting for something and then giving up on it. I've searched for a solution, but I don't seem to have enough of a clue about what's wrong to find the answer. I installed Red Hat 7.2 just recently, and I'm also trying out KDE. I don't think I had this problem initially, because I was using Galeon quite happily at first, and now I dread to try opening it. I think the trouble may have started when I first tried KDE and then went back to Gnome. Could anyone give any insight or suggested troubleshooting? |
Why not try another enviornment like Window Maker, I know it's not a full environment but just give it a shot. I like it a lot. (Hey, that rhymed)
|
Try adding more RAM. That should be easy. Else, try other distro ;-)
Have fun :-) |
Thanks. I probably will try some other environment(s). But I very happy with Gnome generally, so I'm hoping to find the solution. I have 256 MB of RAM, and I don't seem to be running out of it.

Have you turned on the 'network' service?
Else nautilus won't work while connected. |
lokee,
THANK YOU! I'm pretty sure that was it. I had turned off the network service so I wouldn't be hassled for my ethernet card that I'm not using. I was having the trouble just now. I started the network service, and the thing I was waiting for came up. Then I loaded up my desktops with piles of Nautilus, Galeon, Mozilla and other windows, and everything keeps coming up without delay. I am very happy now. :) |
Hi,
I would like to confirm that I had the same problems recently on my Redhat 9 install. For some reason, the network subsystem was trashed while mucking around. After fixing it the slowdown completely disappeared. |
SYS49152, don't thank me, thank luck!
