Application for scribbling on a linux screen?

I'm looking for an application that allows me to scribble on my linux desktop (essentially freezing all the windows and just letting me draw on top of whatever may be on the screen). When I'm done, clicking esc or something should clear all my scribbles and just return things to normal.

I had an application like this on an AIX workstation circa 1996, and it was very useful for tracing out logic on schematics, etc.

Any leads to such an application would be appreciated!

Thanks.

You can do this with Compiz using the Annotate plugin.

compiz isn't installed on the RHEL5 production system I use, and not likely to get installed. I need something that is just a simple app that I can run on RH. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I haven't used it myself, but there's gromit.
