Application error: child process exited abnormally

I am working on a Suse 10 linux system. I have recently installed a software which otherwise works fine. But on runnng some components I get an Application error, which says child process exited abnormally and the program stops running. On checking the details I found that the problem arises while executing the line
"exec normalise $filename $line_no $column_no MINMAX norm_test.in"
On checking the corresponding source code I found a statement:
catch {exec normalise $filename $line_no $column_no MINMAX norm_test.in}stdout, which I guess from my limited knowledge is the source of the error. I understand that 'catch' returns the error "child process exited abnormally" if you get a non zero exit code. But, what I fail to understand is how is it getting a non-zero exit code. Moreover, I think I should also mention that the file norm_test.in does get created.
I would be very grateful for any help in this regard.
Thanks.

normalise returns that error. Not sure if it's a standard function or not or that you can analyse that function as well. It might be that a file does not exists or a bug in normalise or in something that is called from within normalise.

But I am getting the normalised file "norm_test.in". I will check again anyway. Thanks.
