Apparently my discs are too small?

Hello all.

I have been helped with a link to dl the debian live. However, I go to burn them and Power2go tells me the disc doesn't have the space. I am using Memorex 700mb 40x CD-R. Is there a smaller version of the live or will I have to do a hard install? I have found a netinst if that is the case. Please forgive my ignorance.

A quick look at the Debian Live downloads section makes it seem like only DVDs are offered. So, yes, it seems that CDs are installers only and not live -- which is not surprising considering how small a CD is by today's standards, I suppose.
You could always use a USB stick with the DVD image on it to boot from if you have a suitable USB stick?

To try out the live version you will need to use either a DVD or burn the image to a USB stick (using USBWriter).

The netinstall will not give you the opportunity to try out Debian and check hardware compatibility.

Found a usb.

Ok. So I found an old usb that says it is 16gb. I put it in the computer and it wants to format it. But in the capacity it says only 64.0MB. I dont get it.

Which operating system are you using at the moment? With Windows you'd need to have a look in the Disk management utility and see as, sometimes, small partitions are created on larger disks:

different flash, secure boot disabled, boot order adjusted...still boots win.

Took the advice. Got a different usb and put the original dked debian live iso on it. Disabled the secure boot and adjusted the boot order to put both usb/hd and usb/disk at the top. And it boots right into windows. I must say though that the other usbwriter mentioned failed for me. So I dled IsotoUsb freeware and it went right to work. Even shows up on the comp as Wheezy Debian. LOL So I used the <shift> + restart option to go into the menu to boot from a usb. Failed. Something bout no label or something or other. I am using win 8.1 btw. I am thinking I should dl the iso again?

Isoto usb only supports bootable wins iso's. Try rufus

You're welcome. Good luck

Bumberclaude 01-10-2015 08:42 PM

Didn't work :(

The rufus put the iso on the FD. But I keep getting "The selected boot device failed." I honestly do not know what I am doing wrong. Pfft.

Floppy disks are too small for 700M file.
Will your computer boot to cd or usb?
What make & model of computer?
Also if you download debian cd-1 it will fit on cd.

whoops - misrerad the subject ...

Bumberclaude 01-10-2015 11:28 PM

Misunderstood me.....my bad.

The FD was intended to mean Flash Drive. LOL. I'm sorry dude. it is 4gb.

EDDY1 01-11-2015 12:03 AM

Who is the FD manufacturer?
Some FD's aren't bootable.

BTW: Ithink in Rufus you have to tick "Make Bootable"
Also Format Fat

Bumberclaude 01-11-2015 01:08 AM

FD make ...

It is a Lexar 4gb. All the files went to it easily. I burned them, restarted the comp to boot from the flash drive. I did this by holding shift and clicking restart which took me to a restart option of choosing how to restart or go into the bios etc. I chose to boot from USB several times and all failed.

(continued)

After reading multiple pages and tutorials and downloading the Live images several different times, I can only deduce that my flash drive is NON-bootable. I refuse to believe that Debian is incomplete or corrupt. The thing that baffles me is that the flash drive works beautifully in any other scenario. Upon posting this continuation, I am going to try another reboot. If that fails, then I will read some more I suppose.
