Unhappy Apache2 running but not serving any page

Hi all, I've a strange problem on Apache2, prefork version, installed by SuSE 9.1 rpm. Apache is running (requests are not refused) but it simply doesn't display anything, neither the main site pages nor the user pages. Browsing with Konqueror I received a "connection to host interrupted" message.
I've managed to *understand* what SuSE (damned!) has done on the httpd.conf file but I didn't find anything suspicious. I had installed Apache 1.3 before by normal methods (./configure and so on) and it worked well, then I went on Apache 2 in rpm format without deleting the old 1.3 version (ok, I didn't make it start so I suppose i doesn't interfere...).
Anyone has found the same problem? Sorry, I' m really stuck!

Thanks, Kerion

I just purchased SuSE 9.1. When I typed in 'localhost' in my browser, It failed to show a page. I needed to change the firewall setting, then the Apache demo pages would be displayed.

No way. I had the firewall down, try to put it up, and then tried again without... no differences :-(
Could this have anything to do with the permissions of the user and the group defined? When I used Apache 1.3 the user was nobody, now it is wwwrun...
Trying a wget I had this response:

linux:~ # wget localhost
--23:20:31-- http://localhost/
=> `index.html'
Resolving localhost... 127.0.0.1, ::1
Connecting to localhost[127.0.0.1]:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response...
23:20:31 ERROR -1: No data received.

I've also checked my /var/log/apache2/error_log... here's the typical msg i found!

[Sat Jul 24 23:56:31 2004] [notice] child pid 4471 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)

Maybe time to punt.

Since you had apache 1.3 installed from a package, and manually installed apache 2.0, could you check which service you are starting, httpd or httpd2?

You may want to install apache 2 from a package also. With it crashing like that, sounds like the install has to be done over anyway.

Actually it's the contrary... I installed apache 1.3 via sources and then apache 2 via rpm, and I was launching the correct daemons... By the way, I searched the net for faqs and it seems to be happening to quite a lot of ppl. So I decided to throw away any rpm installation (apache 2, php and mysql) and start a new one starting with sources. By now I got mysql and apache 1.3 working (and they are really WELL WORKING now) but, by Murphy's law, php's installation is giving me some headache. Php seems to have some parameters (especially paths to libs and similia) that just overcome the parameters I give in ./configure. Maybe I should close this thread as 'unresolved' and start a new one on this issue, or somebody just can give me an hint on where to focus my search?

Thanks to all, anyway; maybe it was just a bug from Suse 9.1...
