Apache v2 help on Redhat 8
 
Just got apache 2, whatever version came with Redhat 8, up and running. I'm interested in just putting up pictures in a folder to be seen by my friends and family. I looked at ids.sourceforge.net, as I was recommended by some friends to use this to put my pictures, but ran into trouble trying to install ImageMagick and PerlMagick..Anyways, I want something a little easier to setup or at least get my apache to just organize my pictures in a directory that I can show. I can't even get that to work..I tried testing, by putting a text file in /var/www/html..shouldn't that work? at least just show me the text? The apache site is confusing as well! Please, need some assistance or just some primer to get stuff up, especially pix..Thanks!

Yes, it should work. Could you copy httpd.conf file? It contains your Apache settings and will make it easier to help you.

Thanks Mara! Here is a copy of my httpd.conf file. This file is huge! Anyways, i left out th domain name, wasn't sure if i should keep it out there...Thanks for your help.

Another thing, I know I placed the file in the write directory because I would get the Internal Server error, indicating that my configuration maybe wrong.

I believe this file is way too long..I'll trim some of this. I trimmed out the character set config which I think may not apply to this problem. Pls indicate what I should post if its not on this thread.

What happens when you try to access the web page? Do you see the Apache test page? Is Apache even running?

try /sbin/service httpd status

What does it say?

Another thing: the right place for your files (.html and so on) is: /var/www/html

File length is OK (there are mostly comments).

I definitely get the apache test page:

http://mydomainname.com:8080/

I had to do this because our ISP was blocking port 80.

At the least I'd like to run the hello.pl from my website, just to see if everything is running ok. That doesn't even work. The script is in
/var/www/cgi-bin/hello.pl. So, to see it I would type in
http://mydomain.com:8080/cgi-bin/hello.pl, correct??

#!/usr/bin/perl

print "Hello World, this is a test!";

As far as the error this is what I get:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@mydomain.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.


So, if I can at least get this to show correctly, everything else should be configured, right?

If you are getting the Apache test page, then it's working. I would put in a different index page in /var/www/html first before trying to run perl scripts just to make sure it's working.

As far as the perl script, that is the correct directory.

But like I said, get the main web serving issue worked out before you try the scripts.

Thanks Kenny! Yes, I seem to have it working properly. I put a test text file in /var/www/html/test.txt and then put up my browser http://mydomain.com:8080/test.txt and I was able to view the text file.

Ok. So, how do I go about putting up a directory with jpegs? Create a dir in /var/www/html/? and then throw jpegs in there? Thanks for the help.

Now just build your site right from /var/www/html/ and you site will work. Just make sure that your main home page is called index.html
