Apache problem

I have just installed Red Hat 9 and the Apache web server. Everything looked good until I tried testing the web server. When ever I try to go to "localhost" I get the following message: “The connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost.”
Can anyone help me with this message? I am new to the Linux/Apache world and I am lost!
Thanks.

is apache running?
as root do

pidof httpd

if you get back some numbers then it is running.
point your browser to the IP of your machine.
also try 127.0.0.1 wich should be your loopback interface.

take a look at /etc/apache/httpd.conf and see if things look right for what you want to do.
