Apache as a test server

I've just installed my first linux distro (mandrake 9), so this is all new ground for me... After installing Mandrake I used the software installer to install Apache and PHP - I want a setup purely for testing my php-based website.

Now... Apache seems to be working ok as http://localhost gives me the standard successful Apache install page. What I want to know is how I can add my website files to the server path /var/www/html without logging in as root, or do I have to login as root each time I want to do this?

btw, you may have guessed from my question, but I've no experience in conf files or general webserver setups - I've always let my webhost worry about that before, but i'd be grateful of any helpful url's to get me up to speed.

Login as Root in your console. Search the file httpd.conf - Its the Apache Configuration File. Edit the following two lines in this file:
---------------------
DocumentRoot "/var/www/html"
#
# This should be changed to whatever you set DocumentRoot to.
#
<Directory "/var/www/html">
----------------------
Restart your Webserver. I think Mandrake installes Apache via the xinetd scrpit, so make a /etc/init.d/xinetd restart
