Apache; connection refused 127.0.0.1 error.
 

I downloaded Apache so that I can test dynamically generated pages on my computer. I installed it and started the httpd daemon, but when I typed 127.0.0.1 into my browser it came up with "Connection Refused to 127.0.0.1" I would be grateful to any ideas on why it did this.

I installed the most recent tar.gz with the default configuration.

Did you even check to see what directory its using as the default root directory to place pages? Have you tried your actual IP instead of just your loopback? More details please.

I will check httpd.conf, I would give more details straight away but I still can't get my softmodem to work with RedHat, so I keep on having to boot into XP so that I can browse the 'net.

Make sure your firewall is not turned on to block port 80.

I am still a newbie to Linux, so I just turned off the firewall altogether, as the computer isn't connected to the internet anyway. It still gives the same message, connection refused. I checked the document root and it points to where it should.

Is apache running? Verify with ps or top.
Check the log files for errors /var/log

I deleted apache, then installed a rpm version, it worked fine. I decided to give the source another go though, and it worked! I don't think I was doing something altogether right. I am going to buy an external modem so that I can surf on Linux and help myself out a bit more, thanks anyway for all your comments.

I will learn from this, and make sure I post all the information I can collect about any problem I get. (-;
