Anyone not like openSUSE or Mandriva because they're too custom?
Hello,
Long time lurker, first time poster. I would have put this in the General section, but I apparently don't have permission :S.
Anyhow I've been using my monthly quota significantly this month trying out all the different distros, and I've come to not like openSUSE or Mandriva due to their custom config utils.
I was wondering if anyone else felt this way? After testing Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Debian, openSUSE, Fedora and Mandriva, I have come to like Fedora the best due to various reasons.
Though I'm somewhat new to Linux, I just think it makes it too "dumb" and annoying.
This is in absolutely no way meant to be a distro bashing thread and I don't want to stamp on the communities toes, I was just curious what others thought. Before this month of testing Linux out, the last Linux I used was RHL 8.0 from 2001 or 2002!
Personally I think you should just use the distribution that suits you best and not opinionate about others. Most of the time arguments put forward, especially if they aren't thought out well (which apparently is given only to a very, very select set of users), don't foster the type of discussion that leads to something and just end in frustration. Frustration leads to anger and we all know what anger leads to :-]
I was just hoping for some opinions. If the thread got too hairy and was getting flamed over, I'd shut it down or get a mod to do so for me . Though openSUSE or Mandriva aren't for me, I can definitely see that there is certainly a target audience for them and no doubt hard work has certainly been put in by both distro members.
Sure you're free to try but what I'm trying to make you understand is that good discussions are based on providing arguments that all parties can react to in a way that helps the other party understand things. How do you think one should respond to somebody calling your favourite distribution "too "dumb" and annoying" (and what does it actually say about this user saying that)?..
That's is certainly a fair statement. I suppose I'll elaborate.
What I was trying to say was that though their aim is for simplicity, I find they end up being more complex because not all the options that may be required are there. If something slightly "advanced" needs configuring, you need to resort to editing configuration files.
In the end, I was just simply curious if people prefer mostly stock standard desktop environments or prefer these highly customised ones?
You'll have to forgive my bad wording previously, it was about 11:00pm then and now its 1am!
