Any1 Help A Totaly Newbie With No Linux Experiance Wot So Ever!
 

I am having major probs connecting to the net. I have an internal ADSL modem (connexant ) and i aint got a clue how to get connected, I am a total newbie i have been on linux bout 3/4 hours now. I dont realy understand the commands ppl are posting on the forums. Could Some1 please explain to me it TOTALY lames terms, like the most basic terms you could ever thing of how to set up my adsl modem and get connected to the net. I wud be amazingly greatfull.

Is it a winmodem?

most adsl modems are winmodems ... - go to www.linmodems.org to see if you get lucky.

For modems to work, it needs a functioning driver...which controls input and output for the modem. First, winmodems, which lack specific chips to control this I/O, aren't generally supported in linux. If your modem is a hardware modem, then you need to find the appropriate driver, and load it onto your system.

Try to find a driver for linux in the .rpm format, which you load onto your system. Unpack the rpm. Then try to find the device in which your modem is on. You can go to LinuxConf->peripherals->modem->find modem.

From there, use Kppp, go to the devices tab, set it to your modem device. Then query it on the next tab. Set up your account in kppp, and sign on. If you have any problems, just ask the forum again.

This may be a lot of directions to follow, but its easier doing it than reading it. Hope it helps!

Drivers for connexant based chipsets/modems can be found at

try out that site.. if your modem is listed there, there are installation instructions for each driver .. follow those and u will be able to setup the modem
