Any Terminal that is transparent (Not just seeing the background)?
 

My terminal in my Apple OS X is transparent that I can see the applications underneath the terminal screen, but gnome-terminal and Eterm are only transparent to the background... any suggestion that can do the same as the terminal in Mac OS X?

I have no idea. I use aterm for most of my stuff. It is the same way. It will be transparent -- in that it will see the background but not apps. I would love to know the answer to this question if there is one.

Unfortunately X does not support true transparency yet. I don't know of any terminals that will do actual transparency; Aterm comes close but not anything near what Mac OS X has. I guess us Linux people will just have to wait until freedesktop.org gets the new X done.

you might want to check out directfb (apparently, a replacement for XF86) which supports it.

to add to that, i have to say that it may not be something you want.
from the screenshots, imagine having a coupla terminals open with other stuff running, and reading off them. hmm ... might look good/cool, but readability would not be great.

yeah... since OS X has quartz engine n stuff like that, i assume it's much easier to do that.
have u seen the details of Project Looking Glass from sun (I guess itz much talked about in the forum but i m pretty new in here)? it's a true 3-d desktop environment and i think they can do that, and certainly much more...

yes, ive seen that before. i will NEVER, EVER, however, have anything with java on my desktop. it's frustrating enough to see "99% CPU usage: java-vm" for running hello, world. :D

I would have to agree with the cool factor interferring with the usability factor. Heck even my backgrounds can often distract me when using transparencies... but just once I would like to see three stacked windows spewing text all jumbled together... useless but cool. :-)

i tend to use my iBook more often than this linux box... the true transperancy becoms useful when i wanna type something in from something in the webpage... u know. u can see stuff underneath the terminal is quite useful in this case...

it's a shame that my 3 year computer science degree merely taught us Java and never mention any other programming language... seen people crazy in coding java codes and wondering why there programs are so slow.... then they spent another month 'debugging' n hoping it will get faster.... they seem to be slower than the java runtime in that case.....haha

runescape is the only good java program i ever seen,

but to transparityies, i think it would be a good idea cuse it would let u stack terminals in front of other things so you can see whats going on on the terminal while doing somthing else with not much interference (altho there should be keybindings to enable and disable trasparetn windows so you can use your system for somthing good)

o and yea, that directfb thing i think iv seen around, but 1) is it comapatable with xfree86 libaries (so i can compile and install things just the same as i would in xf86), and 2)does it let you use your choice of window manager, or does it manage its own windwos (i think having to pick your own window manager is a good thing as it makes things more flexable and more customized wich is realy why transparaent windwos ur wanting in teh first palce eh?)
