Any suggestions for getting a laptop to recognize a smartphone?
My girlfriend has a Samsung smartphone (not the exploding model fortunately) and a USB cord but her HP Windows 10 laptop won't recognize it. We want to transfer some pics from the phone to the computer. Any suggestions?

Also, some micro-USB cables can't transfer data. I have like 30 cables, and of them, only about 8 can transfer data, the rest are strictly charging cables.
My issue with Airdroid was after releasing the "premium" version, they crippled the free version on file size, and modern phones pictures are SIGNIFICANTLY larger than the max file transfer size. So I've went back to using cables for everything.

Thanks for the heads-up, Timothy Miller.
I've not yet run into this issue, but now I am prepared if I do.
I am usually transferring podcasts (generally about 50 MB in size) to the phone.
My main issue with transferring pictures from the phone is that, if you try to transfer several at once, Airdroid insists on putting them in a *.zip file and, according to the error messages I get, mucks up the metadata in doing so. When I try to view the unzipped files in Gwenview, Gwenview complains that it can't display the pictures because of messed up metadata. I do not encounter this when I transfer them one at a time. (I'm using v. 4.0.)
My pictures are generally somewhere between 1.3 and 2 MB.
Thanks rokytnji. Is that safe though? They're not stealing your stuff?
I don't know. Everybody is stealing everything on the net lately. As long as I get to keep what I have. As you can see. I do not overthink these things.
Now to give thanks to Timothy Miller for that useful post of his.
Because I have not ran into that yet. But my needs are simple.
Edit: Joke time. Since Windows makes you pay for everything. I guess paying for a premium version of a file sharing application falls right in line with that train of thought. Your girl friend should fall right into that with out skipping a beat.
did you make sure your phone was set to MPT or is it MTP? when you plug in your phone in your message area you should see an option as in most if not all other Addroid phones give, plus you should be able to get into settings and look around until you find it as well. this allows images and data to be transferred. Windows usually sees something then tries to download drivers for it.

Thanks Timothy but how do I know if the cable I have is only for charging?

Thanks BW. I'll check it (the MTP thing). I did get into the settings, into the devices, everywhere. This should be so simple. Unless it could be like Timothy Miller said I have the wrong type cable.

I found that out myself the hard way.
but usually the cable that comes with the phone is both data, and charge. Unless they are getting further into cheaper land.
a few dollars keep the receipt and check it then take it back to get your money back if needed.
