Norton Internet is a Microsoft Windows application so won't run on Linux which has a completely different structure.
Linux is inherently safer than Windows because of this and has far fewer viruses out in the wild. (I haven't used a virus checker at all since I moved to Linux in 2000)
There are virus checkers available but mainly to help protect your Windows using friends from any malignant code which passes through your Linux system to them, email attachments spring to mind.

You have been a windoze user for 32 years and during that time paid for antivirus? Why? It is still signatures, paid for, or otherwise. You can, with time, put snort on XP and have "antivirus" so why the switch to "Linux"?

wanted to try something new / windows xp no longer has support for it
and on a limit budget right now so no new computer for me have to make do with what i got
and don't want windows 8.1 to many bugs
as for paying for antivirus i have try the free software and as stated before lost 2 full hard drives to a bad virus
norton does the job even if i got to pay for it

thanks for the help and info

32 years is before win95, so that's good going for XP. Typos appart, I don't know about bugs in Win8.1 but if you have XP then shrinking down the hard drive and installing linux should not be too much of problem, perhaps Mint with Mate desktop? Run defrag before you shrink the partition.
Note that GNU/Linux is not Windoze so will present itself differently and things will be different, including intrustion prevention. Think about this, does Widnows facilitate daul booting with Mach/os/s?

Fred.
