Anti Virus software for Linux
 

Anyone know of any good AV software for Mandrake linux?:newbie: :Pengy:

There are no real viruses for linux hense no real reason to have AV software.

Take your pick ;) Most people will probably advise you that linux isn't as prone to virus's. You might look into a firewall first/instead, and might I be the first to suggest firestarter :D

Well, there really isn't any, and there's no good reason to install it unless your mandrake box is forwarding mail/data to a windows box.

You see, what I've gathered, is that antivirus is really unncecessary in linux, because of how it works -- user permissions prevent a virus from hosing your whole box, and there really aren't any virii that affect linux.

So the only anti-virus for linux are programs which filter mail and downloads from a linux server to prevent spreading a virus to windows systems!

For Linux I Use F-Prot

There are some programs out there.
I use F-prot. It works fine (havent found any viruses yet but I don't think it is the scanners fault ;) ). The nice thing with f-prot it's free.

I think Norton has a scanner for Linux aswell but it can only scan Linux boxes using the network. i.e it needs a Windows box to run on and then scan Linux over the network. (There might be a new version out so this Norton thing could be wrong).

FGS, forget the MICROS~1 "virus" paradigm.

In Linux/GNU we got enough fun with worms, trojans, LKMs and overflows. Btw, this is an "and" not an "or" list:
- harden the kernel: patch with Grsecurity, LIDS or alike,
- don't install software you do not use NOW,
- harden network software you run,
- use an integrity checker: Aide, Samhain or tripwire,
- use a system scanner: Chkrootkit (and one of) Tiger, COPS,
- and use a virus scanner

First I thought it awkward to put it that way, because paranoia ain't a bad thing in itself IMO, but when you think about it being more paranoid does ./make sense. The ultimate question on such a powerfull system is "what do you trust".

If you think this doesn't ./make sense, your ultimate question should be "where don't you want your /etc/shadow to go today?" :-]

If you still think this doesnt make sense, take for instance the case of one crucial access control app (TCP Wrappers), one MTA (Sendmail), and one secure communications package (OpenSSH).
All widely used and trusted.
All have had sources compromised.

I know, I know. :)
But at least now I'm the only human able to get to my keyboard and thus possibly execute any downloaded files etc.
And with this thing just used as a desktop with no internet servers listening and high security settings, I feel I can afford to relax a little more than with windows+IE+sisters. Keeping a check on security&bug sites of course. :)
