Anti-Virus software for Linux?
 

Could someone recommend a good virus scanner for Linux. I am a newbie, and would like to send and receive e-mail, and scan for viruses.

I've heard good things about http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/ combined with F-prot AV, but unless you have Windows client machines you don't need to worry about viruses on Linux.

linux is not prnoe to email viruses. they are a windows thing (cue someone to say linux has approx 5 viruses....). there are commercial unix mail scanners, but they are for large scale networks.

i think read somewhere there are maybe less then 10 viruses for unix systems

We use this on our company's email server, running Suse 7.3 and Sendmail. It's worked well for us.

I think the only need for a virus scanning software is f you run mail server to deliver mail to your windows clients, that's the only application I can see for a anti-virus, as for linux viruses they are so easy to write but there is nothing, except total mess of the system, can be done. And most of the "linux viruses" are scanners and sniffers, but if you are coutious about your system security they are easily detected and removed. And if you are not on a large network there is nothing the cracker or script-kiddie can do except sniffig your traffic, get snort to monitor your connections (this one is also used by crackers/script-kiddies).

Thanks everybody for all of your helpfull answers. I have downloaded some of the free trial anti-virus software that you have pionted me to, and will try them out to see which is best for me.
