anti virus
 
hi..guy.. pls advice me...which is the software anti-virus..eg.AVG or Norton to install in Linux ..and how to scan all the file similar windows and detect it ..as virus

I'm pretty sure AVG has a free download for Linux. Yep, you can get it here

also there are clamav and f-prot (dunno if they are free or not). clamav is free i think and f-prot not.

f-prot is free for private use on Linux.

I would use clam-av rather than the Linux port of avg. From what i've seen, clam does a better job of finding viri.

Also, unless you do a lot of communication with a windows box, or run a mailserver, you don't really need an antivirus. If a windows virus even gets into your system, it won't know what to do, and from what I understand, all the Linux viri are in labs.

Think again ...
go to google and search for "linux slapper" (which is
a worm, not a virus, but still ... ). True, it targeted
apache, but that's on Linux (if we took the office-
macro viruses out windows would look much more
sane, too ;}).

if you want to look at all the security holes in every program, no OS is secure.

But, in the long run, one worm, as compared to the thousands of windows viri, doesn't equal out.

While slapper is important to avoid, it's sure to "I LOVE YOU" or any of the other meanincing ones.

In all honesty, not everyone uses apache, but pretty much everyone uses office.

What I was trying to point out is that we're not SAFE
just because we use Linux; we're less likely to have
problems of that kind. But the first step to being
breached is to assume that you're safe. Paranoia is
your friend, and any protective measure you can come
up with is going to help.

If you disagree I strongly suggest that you go and read
all the stickies in our security forum.

I agree with you. But one thing I've foudn with a lot of Linux and Windows users is a sense of paranoia that can end up crippiling a user. In fact, in all the years I've used Windows, I've gotten a virus once, and it was my own fault. When it comes down to it, preventitive measures are better than any anti-virus you can buy/download for free.

(But, when it comes down to it, I do agree with you)
