Did you try pinging your dad's machine? If that works, your network is fine.

I prefer to use a proxy server instead of Internet Connection Sharing. The cable line in my house is connected to my dad's Windoze 98 Box. I downloaded several proxy servers such as Winproxy, Analogx, Janaserver etc and found 602Pro LAN Suite most to my liking. Try any one of these and see the one you like best.

no i cant ping the other machine...
i know how to set networks up, that is why i cannot understand why it wont work, which is why i know it must be something with linux, as i am not familiar with it

it took me awhile and a LOT of help before i was fully able to completely leave windows. i went back and forth between the two for awhile, i dont blame you for getting frustrated. I still have lots of questions and a few problems, but eventually you'll get comfortable and familiar enough with it to learn the basic functions and make everything work, and its really a relief to be there. look for rioutil, it works just fine with my rio600, just took some research to find out how to get it to work
