Hi, and welcome to LQ!
Glad you found reading here helpful. :) Now, I don't know how many THINGS here will be able to help you, but I'm sure that one or the other person may. As for your question: that should be no problem with a generic distro, iptables is set-up easily enough, and Samba, even though it can be tricky in some configurations, should be fine, too. That said: having a file-server to be a firewall as well is bad practice, and you should be aware of that. In terms of the belkin controller and the big HDD it really depends on what chipset the controller uses, and if it's ATA or SATA, and what distro (with which kernel) you settle for. Cheers, Tink |
well thanks and i am looking into having Samba run my file server. the main reason i wanted to have both in one setup is that i have a really limited amount of space in my house and i was trying to save some $$$ by having everthing in on computer and save some $$ by only needing one computer up and running. (you know how a good computer can kill your elect. bill)
when things are all said and done i wanted to get 4 300 sata harddrives by maxtor and run it in a raid 1+0 or maybe a raid 5 on my file server so i could maybe also telnet in to it specking of witch that do you guys reconmend using for having access to my home setup when i am at like school or work? |
no other input? anyone?

Funny. That's what the speeding bastard who killed
that child in the road-accident said, too... What I mean is: I appreciate that you find your question particularly interesting or urgent, however, it is to none of the other users, and the rules are the same for all. Cheers, Tink |
