another newbe question

first of all i been reading the fourms for a while so i at least have an idea what is going on.

what i am looking to do is make a firewall/fileserver all in one box

i was looking at smoothwall and damn small linux but i wanted to know if anything can give me some more advice

what i am looking to use is an old p2 or p3 computer with about 256mb of ram with a 3-8 gig hd from there i want to use a belkin controler card and a 250 gig maxtor harddrive can some one tell me if this setup will work

later on i may add a printer to this setup and all my other computers will be a windows based setup i.e. windows 2000pro and windows xp home and pro

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

Glad you found reading here helpful. :)

Now, I don't know how many THINGS here will
be able to help you, but I'm sure that one or the
other person may.

As for your question: that should be no problem
with a generic distro, iptables is set-up easily
enough, and Samba, even though it can be
tricky in some configurations, should be fine, too.

That said: having a file-server to be a firewall
as well is bad practice, and you should be aware
of that.

In terms of the belkin controller and the big HDD
it really depends on what chipset the controller
uses, and if it's ATA or SATA, and what distro
(with which kernel) you settle for.

Cheers,
Tink

well thanks and i am looking into having Samba run my file server. the main reason i wanted to have both in one setup is that i have a really limited amount of space in my house and i was trying to save some $$$ by having everthing in on computer and save some $$ by only needing one computer up and running. (you know how a good computer can kill your elect. bill)

when things are all said and done i wanted to get 4 300 sata harddrives by maxtor and run it in a raid 1+0 or maybe a raid 5 on my file server so i could maybe also telnet in to it

specking of witch that do you guys reconmend using for having access to my home setup when i am at like school or work?

Funny. That's what the speeding bastard who killed
that child in the road-accident said, too...
