Unhappy Annoying Newbie with FTP Probs!

Hi, I'm a (probably!) newbie in the sense I barely understand anything with Linux - and have a bit of a challenge I need to do

Seriously - I have just had a Linux Server installed, with Debian & Webmin - and I'm trying to configure ProFTPD on it at the moment.

The configuration I'm trying to set up is so that each user has access to their own unique directory exclusively and to a main public directory - on which they can download only.

As Admin I want to be able to move files from the users directory, and to be able to reassign them over to the relevent space in the public directory.

Does this make sense? Is it possible? And more to the point - can someone either point me in the right place for the information - or help this idiot (me) on the best (and ideally - easiest!) way of doing it!

All (and any!) help certainly appreciated!

Normally, users logging in would have the same permissions they have locally, it would depend on your file permissions.

you may want to use chroot if you want each user to only see below their folder.

for moving files around you should use ssh.

I would suggest using ssh, scp, sftp for everything so you don't risk giving out your passwords. I believe ftp should only be allowed for anonymous login only. But that's just my opinion.
