Animated Gif in Ubuntu Hardy

i recently made some festive holiday Gif animations to spice up my desktop for Christmas, but they don't show as animations. i tryed viewing them though picture viewer and have them in my desktop background, but to no success. they do animate in firefox, however. i was wondering if Ubuntu doesn't support animated pictures, or if there is an add-on i could get to support my gifs.

You need something like xwinwrap to put an animation on the desktop because animations on desktops slow down the whole computer they don't want to support it.
