Linus has, in the past, "dropped in here" and had no problems at all with posting in English. While, between us, we have several different languages, we do not have all languages and should not be expected to. By not posting in English you substantially reduce the number of people who can help you and make it very difficult to see whether a person should be helped at all.

And, as has been posted here repeatedly over the years - this is Jeremy's board and we should follow his rules. There is no automatic right to free speech here.

It's not about free speech, it's about unlawful discrimination based upon ethnicity. It's really that simple ;-)

Re Linus. If he posted "I like Linux' here in Icelandic, would pixellany get on his pony and whine about it, or would he kiss ass. I put it that he would kiss ass.

Enjoy your zenaphobic forum. It's not for me ;-)

Ethnicity does not preclude anyone from speaking any specific language. They just need to have learnt it. No discrimination to be seen here.

Seeing as Linus is Finnish, I think the chances of him posting in Icelandic are minimal.

You can bleat on about discrimination all you like, but if the moderators only speak english and the majority of users only speak english, it's sensible to state that posts must be in english. Anyone who doesn't like it is presumably free not to use the site. It's only discrimination if it's something that the person who yowls "discrimination!" can't help, like skin colour - whereas anyone is free to learn english just the same as I'm free to learn hindi or spanish or whatever. I can't realistically learn to change my skin colour and so denying access to a service or whatever on that basis *is* discrimination. Otherwise you could say that I'm being discriminated against by not being allowed to fly a fighter jet, even though I've not learnt how.

I agree.

Would you be annoyed if there were members that constantly posted in languages that 99% of members didn't understand?

Personally I would not like to see the forum littered with non-English. My issue is the offensive way with which a power crazed moderator made such a big deal out of it. Just delete it and move on - don't spit out the dummy like an ass. Whoever picked the guy as a moderator I don't know, but it was not for his tact.

spampig, when I follow your reasoning, then most countries in this world are discriminating. Moost countries, if not all, have something in their laws regarding the language used for official communications. E.g. I live in Belgium and here we have 3 official languages Dutch, French and German. Eventhough people here might understand English, you can't do any official business in English without an official translation. Just because what is said earlier regarding possibly not being able to understand the foreign language.

Sorry, so what is your issue again?

If it's ethnicity or some sort of half-assed discrimination, you're wrong - the ability to learn english is not based on race, gender, religion or socio-economic background.

If it's the fact that one of the moderators has simply rubbed you the wrong way and you bleated "discrimination" simply to lend legitimacy to the fact that you've taken a dislike to one of the moderators, well....that's sort of lame, to be honest. Especially as you don't seem to have much of a handle on what discrimination means or when it's appropriate to use it. Crying wolf and all that.

Especially in the aviation industry, where I believe english is still the de-facto language of the air. Perhaps spampig should sue

OK, so would that not mean the ability for you to learn Arabic is not based on anything either?

I won't rise to your little retort regarding the rude and abusive moderation of this thread as I don't think it would bring anything to it other than to say I find the guy funny and I'm glad that hate and frustration is not part of my personality LOL.

@spampig - wind yer neck in. If you have an issue with a moderator or the actions they have taken either email them or Jeremy to discuss it. The actions that were taken were entirely reasonable - request an English translation, wait, clear the post.

I guess that is a matter of opinion. Personally I found them quite rude and offensive, but some people don't have my standards so I must respect that diversity of those more challenged ;-)

Erm, no, I don't believe so. Aside from time and desire. Which are not discriminatory categories, I'm afraid.

I didn't see the moderator being "rude and abusive". The moderator welcomed the OP to LQ and requested they use english. I don't see what's wrong with that honestly.

@spampig: Politeness is always required! But this is an English speaking forum, so you can also consider it to be rude to speak a different language.
How would you feel if you would be in a room with your fellow countrymen and I would walk in starting to speak Dutch to all the people in the room? And on top of that me expecting an answer from the rest... To add to that, if another Dutchman would enter the room and we will start to speak Dutch, is considered to be plain rude when none of us would translate it for you.

Twas the little hissy fit by a certain moderator deleting other peoples follow up posts in non English that was the killer, followed by the little stamp feet of 'Please don't do that again' which, giving his normal rants, seems to be missing the 'or else' clause. Like I say, different opinions. If the post was an issue just email/pm the guy and delete it. There is no need to enter and win the 'over zealous moderation ass of the week' award for it, really.

Play nice now - I don't think this is really worth any more of my time - but feel free to carry on in his support with the back slapping :-)
