An intro to The X Windows System

Hey,
I have just installed Fedora Core 3 on a junk computer so I can play around with Linux before I dedicate my good computer to Linux and I read somewhere about this thing called the X Windows System. I read that it controlls the input/output of your whole computer. Well, somewhere in there I read that you can have remote desktop to a computer somewhere else on your network, even with a differant OS ( a question about that: will it work on WinXP?). How would I go about doing that?
Is there any other important information to know about X or any good links please let me know!!!

man X and google for exporting X display, or better, ssh X11 tunneling. And ssh from windows to linux is easy, although getting X with it (if you can work with a terminal you don't need X, it's not true that X controls ALL IO of the computer, just the clients under it) is harder, you'll need either exceed (commercial) or X setup through cygwin.
