aMule and LowId: How to configure firewall?
 

Under Gnome, I've installed and run aMule. When I try to connect to some servers, it tells me I can, 'cause I've a LowID. I know it depends to the firewall. How can I know what firewall is running on my machine? How can I configure it to haven't a LowID? I've just to shut down it? Can anyone explain me what is the problem when using aMule (or other program) under a firewall?

It is a long time since I used eDonkey programs, but i think they need some ports to be open. I think it can be a port you choose yourself, but you should check upon that. The problem with a low ID ,is that other users can't connect to you, typically when you are behind NAT or a firewall. I have never used fedora, so I can't tell you if you are using a firewall or not.

You can check the aMule settings to see which ports it uses for transfer. Then go to Firewall settings (or /etc/sysconfig/<something>) and open those ports.

I've used FC3 only for a couple hours on my laptop (tried it out), so I can't give any more detailed info. Check FC3 help to see how to open ports in your (iptables) firewall.

You could of course open the ports manually everytime you want to use aMule, but that would be rather clumsy solutions. Check "man iptables" for info on that. It's not going to be a walk in the park, however.
