AMSN / GAIM Problems

Arggghhh im going in sane!!!

I'm a newbie to linux and i am having major difficulties with getting onto the msn service, i have tried gaim but i keep getting the error eveyone else is getting "ssl support is needed, please install it" but i am abviously not upto this linux thing as i still cant get it to work.

I need to install one of these as this is how i stay in contact with all my friends and family and i dont have windows as a dual boot as i think windows has fecked my MBR, when i install windows and it reboots i get some error about muti partitions or something, i tried partitioning it, running fdisk /mbr formating the whole drive a fresh but it still wont install xp so i gave up and put redhat 9 on it and said bye bye to windows but that seems to harder than i first expected. But back to the original problem.

Ive tried downloading the files people have suggested but i cant seem to get it to work.

I have also tried to run AMSN but i get the error "/usr/bin/env: wish: No such file or directory
" I have tried to search google for this wish program but i cant find it.

Am i right in thinking you need to have tcl installed? as thats what it looks like i need.

I have tried installing tcl from the rpm but it says its already installed

[root@localhost bu5t4]# rpm -i tcl-8.3.5-88.i386.rpm
package tcl-8.3.5-88 is already installed

If anyone could help a newbie with this i would be very greatfull

run updatedb as root and then do "locate wish" and see if you have it and if you do where it is. That will at least tell you if you have it :)

If you're on RedHat, install Mozilla-nss package and make sure you have the mozilla lib directory in your /etc/ld.so.conf. This workaround has been documented in GAIM website. If possible, upgrade GAIM to the latest release.

hi folks,

Ok i downloaded the rpm of mozilla-nss and when i run it it says that its already installed.

I had a look in my /etc/ld.so.conf file and there was no reference to mozilla

here is the original file

/usr/kerberos/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/lib/qt-3.1/lib
/usr/lib/wine

so i did a locate mozilla and i found it at /usr/lib/mozilla-1.2.1/ so i added it to the bottom of the file like so

/usr/kerberos/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/lib/qt-3.1/lib
/usr/lib/wine
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.2.1/
Is this the correct folder? as it still doesnt work

do i need to run anything to make these changes active?

Thanks again

Yup... if you are compiling Gaim from source then you will need to link to nss in the config file. It is recommended that you use a pre-compiled version if at all possible, but the compile is pretty painless, so it's up to you.

After you add the line to your ld.so.conf file, you need to run ldconfig as root:

#> ldconfig

then you will need to install the binaries (or compile from source).

Check this link for a better description on how to do it. :)

I have done all the things it says to do in your link, i thought it would work as it said i had to install mozilla-nspr then i tried mozilla-nss again and it did install.

I added the line to my config file and ran ldconfig but i get the error:

/usr/bin/env: wish: No such file or directory

when I try to run the binary i downloaded.

this is what happened

[root@localhost bu5t4]# rpm -ivh mozilla-nss-1.4-3.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
mozilla-nspr = 1.4-3 is needed by mozilla-nss-1.4-3
[root@localhost bu5t4]# rpm -ivh mozilla-nspr-1.4-3.i386.rpm

[root@localhost bu5t4]# rpm -ivh mozilla-nss-1.4-3.i386.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:mozilla-nss ########################################### [100%]
[root@localhost bu5t4]# vi /etc/ld.so.conf
[root@localhost bu5t4]# cd msn/
[root@localhost msn]# ./amsn
/usr/bin/env: wish: No such file or directory
[root@localhost msn]#

Any other ideas?

Hi, I have downloaded amsn, the first program I downloaded from the Internet, but I can't install it. My question is:

How do I install downloaded programs?? (I use MDK 9.2)

Q: I just upgraded Gaim and the MSN plugin will not load. Why?

A: You did not compile with SSL support, or the SSL plugin failed to load. As of protocol version 9, the MSN protocol requires the use of SSL, which gaim provides by either GnuTLS or the combination of NSS and NSPR from the Mozilla project. Install one or both of these and recompile Gaim, and see the next question.

Q: The MSN plugin won't load, but I have Mozilla NSS!

A: Some distributions, including Slackware, install Mozilla NSS to a non-standard directory. The fix is simple. Edit /etc/ld.so.conf and add /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4 (or whatever version you're using, but it's usually 1.4) to the file, and run ldconfig as root. Then re-run configure and recompile Gaim. You may also need to specify where the include file are for NSS and NSPR, see ./configure --help for the options.

EXTRA NOTES:

Red Hat Linux (8.0 or 9)
========================
Use the gaim provided packages : http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...p?group_id=235

NOTE: If you're using a Mozilla builds from here :
http://people.ecsc.co.uk/~matt/downl...illa/1.4/RPMS/
Then you WILL need to add /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4 to /etc/ld.so.conf & run ldconfig as
root. Replace 1.4 with whichever version you have installed.

wish is provided by tcl and tk, you need both installed to use wish

when you use amsn for the first time, you may need to type

wish amsn

When amsn does start for the first time, it will ask you to download the tls plugin, do so then amsn should work with MSN 9

Yeah! I've got it now! Konsole!

gearoid 11-18-2003 08:13 AM

I had problems getting amsn to run too. It was telling me that wish was not found. What I had to do was install tcl/tk. Then I was still getting the same error but it was because the path to wish wasn't in my PATH. Being a newbie it took me ages to figure this out though - very frustrating.

But I still have a problem with amsn. I have to turn off the sounds or I get the following error message everytime I get a message...

sox: Sound card appears to only support 2 channels. Overriding format

anyone know how to sort this out (besides turning off event sounds that is)??

thanks,
Gearoid
