I am tempted to install aMSN but haven't a clue how to start. Would i have to open an MSN account? Any help or advice is really appreciated.

You can either install aMSN using your distribution's package manager (if it is available), or from source. The former would be the first thing to try. If you don't know how to check whether a package is available from the package manager, post which distribution you're using. Obviously, you'll need a Windows Live ID if you want to use aMSN.
