amarok ipod permissions
Hi, I'm fairly new to linux. I use ubuntu intrepid ibex and I have gnome for my desktop environment. I recently installed amarok a few weeks ago. I got both my ipod color and ipod shuffle to be added for amarok, since I'm using gnome. I can add music on my ipod shuffle. However on my ipod color, I get the following error

Media Device:failed to create lockfile on ipod mounted at /media/J__MIKE: Read only file system

I've scowered through the web to find a solution, but I haven't found any help thus far.

Hi Mike,
I know absolutely zilch about ipods and their file system. Based on the error message, it seems that the ipod has a read-only fs. Is there anyway you can change this since amarok seems to want to write something to your ipod? Is the ipod fs mounted to your system as read-only, perhaps? You can get some info by typing "mount" (w/o quotes) with no argument and see what it says about the ipod fs.

Hi Mike,
As a follow-up to my previous response, here a link to an amarok plug-in that handles ipod devices. There may be a package for it or you can download it directly from the site if you don't have it already.

I just experienced the same problem. I noticed the owner of my /media/IPOD was set to 'root' (and not to my username as usual) and I couldn't use the command 'sudo chown -R [username] /media/IPOD' to re-assign permissions:

chown: changing ownership of `/media/IPOD': Operation not permitted
So, I simply ejected the iPod through the GNOME file explorer, and re-attached the iPod, and strangely the iPod files owner were shown to be my username again.
