Am I using shadow passwords?

How do I know if I am using shadow passwords? Are their any alternatives?

I'm trying to setup NIS, but the howto frequently refers to things that need to be done 'if you are using shadow passwords', and I don't know if that applies to me or not.

of you have a file in /etc/ named shadow your using it.

My guess you are, cause i havent seen an installation in the past 4 years that havent used it
