am having trouble with grup
 

I'm having problems installing ubuntu 10.10 alongside windows on a seperate partition. i keep getting the grup rescue prompt.

What exactly are the errors and warnings that are you are getting? How many hard drives are on your system? And by the way, it is grub, and not grup.

Thank you for the correction. the error i get is "no such partition" and i'm using just one hard disk which i have partitioned.

We need a lot more info.
If you can run the Ubuntu CD in liveCD mode ("try without updating your system" or similar) do that, go here, do as it says, and we'll have a better idea of how your machine is set-up, and what may be wrong.

Exactly what errors you see on screen, post them? And how did you try to install Ubuntu, please give some more information.
