Samba is a network file sharing tool, not a remote desktop. If your performance in VNC is low, configure the client to reduce the colors to 256 and set fullscreen updates to automatic or none.

xrdp provides a Remote Desktop Protocol server for Linux. I have limited experience with it, but it worked and was supported by Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection tool (on my Mac at least). In my experience, the RDP protocol is faster than VNC, though I have no numbers to back that up.
