alt1 + text only installation - how?

Hi there,

I have an ancient Toshiba 480CDT laptop that I want to install mandrake 10 onto as the only OS. It's not the most powerful of beasts and kernel 2.6 won't recognise the cd drive (after just booting from it!?) - so I have to use 2.4 for starters.

Doing this install graphically it freezes about 1/3 in whilst "installing package liblDL2.0" My guess is that my 48mb of memory (yes, I know) is having a bit of a hard time of it all so I want to run the install in text mode as well as with the "alt1" option - I've tried at a few syntax combinations but I can't seem to get them to both work together...

So, what should I be typing at the boot: prompt?

Cruddy old laptop specs: Toshiba 480CDT, P1 233mhz, 48mb ram, 4gb hdd, cd-rom (no floppy drive)

It is probably a memory issue. I am not up on Mandrake, but I know bigger distros like Red Hat and SuSE recommend a minimum of 64 M for text mode, 128 M for X, (tho 256 is recommended. Maybe you should try something smaller. Go to distrowatch.com and maybe snag a distro with a smaller requirement. Or try knoppix from the cdrom only and see if that works without even installing to the hard drive. It is great at recognizing hardware and may even give ya a hint on the cdrom problem.

cheers amfoster, it does look like mandrake is just a bit too beefy - I've installed DSL and that seems to be running fine at the moment...
