Alt key to open menus?

On Windows the ALT key selected program menus so you can navigate them with up and down arrow. This does not work on Llnux. is there some alternative?

Thanks

In most apps, you can use Alt + first letter of the menu usually, like Alt+F for file menu, etc.

If you simply need to focus the desktop menu, use Alt + F1? Note: this is DE specific; it works on Gnome, I don't know about the other ones. If you need to access application menu, just look whether the menubar has underscored letters. If it has, use Alt + letter.

Thanks. On Ubuntu 9.04 in the apps I tried it seems to need "hold" ALT + press the underscored letter.
