alt-gr ASCII codes don't work ?

I don't know if ALT-GR and ASCII code is a thing that only works on MS ... however I need to type the tilde character with my keyboard, and it is only possible with 126 ASCII code. In my RH9 installation I can't do this .. any suggestions ? Italian layout ! Thanks
