Alsaconf Error: "No supported PnP or PCI cards found..."
 

Hey all, just installed Slackware 9.1 (is there anyway to check if I successfully upgraded to v. 10.0?) anyway tried to configure my sound running alsaconf as root however I get the error:


"No supported PnP or PCI card found.
Would you like to probe legacy ISA sound cards/chips?"

I'm pretty sure I'm using the bare.i kernal that came with it.

most likely support for your sounds card isnt compiled into the kernel. you should recompile your kernel with support for your sounds card.

Umm how?
Lol I tried just completly upgrading the kernel (the reason I've had to reinstall linux so many times after I screw something up) but now basically nothing works. Atleast this time the old kernel is still working...unlike the last 10 tries :-P.

Also just to add more info, I'm pretty sure I'm using the onboard sound on an ASUS A7N8X-E motherboard.

Finally, to those who might find this somehow:

I downloaded and installed the driver intel8x0 and followed the directions :
here

if you leave the origonal kernel image alone when you recompile the kernel you should always be able to boot into linux even if the new kernel doesnt work. this will allow you to fix the new kernel.

i follow the steps at the above link (it takes me a few recompiles most the time). the site for slackware but the steps for recompling the kernel should be the same not matter the distro

I also have this problem and the link given here into the ALSA documentation is no longer up-to-date. I have the driver for my sound card built into the kernel, and alsamixer sees the chip and the speakers can be heard, but I get the 'No supported PnP or PCI card found' message from alsaconf and I get no input from microphone.

What can I do to get things fixed ?
