alsa wmix
 

Today I changed from a kernel using OSS to a kernel with only ALSA installed, not the OSS API, nothing OSS.

This works fine, music playing etc.

What is my device called when using alsa ?
When I try to start wmix I am told:

>wmix {1011}[20:41]
error: cannot open mixer device /dev/mixer
>ls -ls /dev/mixer {1012}[20:41]
0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 2004-02-15 18:00 /dev/mixer -> /dev/mixer0
>wmix -m /dev/dsp {1013}[20:43]
error: cannot open mixer device /dev/dsp

Any ideas ?

Go back to the alsa website and install the rest of alsa with the oss compatibility libraries and links so oss programs still work?

I really do not belive that I need OSS compatability, I just need to fund the new device name ?

alasmixer. After you make your settings
run alsactl store to save them.

Yes alsamixer is graet for controlling the volume. Still it would be nice to get the dockapp wmix working, can you assist with that ?

OSS compatibility, means, it makes the links, so that programs that want to use /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer, can. That's all it does. Is make the links and settings for you. So just install it already for the things that want oss.

Ok that sounds cool, do you know what the device name for the alsa mixer is ?? Then I could do it myself :-)

Until some magical future day years from now, when all developers get together and say... Hey, lets just use this alsa thing isntead. And dump out all the old code from oss and the links and locations...

You must. NO CHOICE, not 1 other option. INSTALL, the alsa-oss packages, to get sound for those stubborn old oss based programs.

I repeat!

This is not something you can Tweak, Adjust, Change, Modify, Link, Fix, Program, or in ANY WAY, change on your own.

If you want sound for these programs. Just INSTALL the oss compat stuff and be done with it. Its really not that hard. So just stop wasting time asking for a way around it, and DO IT.

My original question was about WMIX which claims to have compatability for ALSA. Therefore I though, this program might have compatability with ALSA, now let me ask linuxquestions.org how to make it work. Now if the compatability issue is through the alsa-oss package I am geniuinly sorry for having wasted your time, but it would have been great if they had mentioned that in their MAN page.
